My Favorite Things Project

September 11, 2012 0 Comments

You would have thought I had just won a million dollars by the way I was screaming in delight the other day.  One of my favorite childhood movies was on – The Sound of Music.  Yes!!  I caught it right as the opening credits were rolling and, in the background, the song “My Favorite Things” was playing.  It instantly reminded me of my gratitude practice.  This took it a step further though.  Daily, I think about the things I am grateful for.  This helps remind me of all that I have, and keeps me in a state of abundance verses lack.  What I don’t have is a running list of my absolute favorite things.  I paused and thought to myself, “What are all of my favorite things?”  I never really thought about them all at once.  And they have shifted significantly over the years.  I was thinking it would be great to create a collage of all of them that I could put up in my office and refer to on a regular basis.

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I’m feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don’t feel so bad

I was talking to a friend yesterday and she mentioned that she actually notices the difference in her mood (and actions that flow from that mood) when she is not intentional about doing the things that she loves.  Same here.  And same for many people.  I added that, in addition to doing the things I love, I know that I must maintain a consistent spiritual practice to remind myself of the Truth.  This year, my spiritual practice and intimate relationship with God has actually become one of my favorite things.  In the past, that would have never made the list.  I would be thinking of all of the things “in the world” that I loved to do, and the things that I thought made me feel complete.  But knowing, and reminding myself daily, that I am already complete because that’s how God created me allows me to enjoy my other favorite things even more – without attachment to making me feel whole.

I’m excited about creating my “favorite things” board.  I’m going to take my time with it so I can put it up in my office.  Will you join me in creating one of your own?  It’ll be fun!

While you’re working on it you can listen to this fabulous version of the song, My Favorite Things, by John Coltrane.  Also, if you haven’t checked it out already, I recently created a Jazz Meditations Facebook page which features some great mellow grooves for your quiet moments.  Enjoy!

Keep shining!

About the Author:

I used to live life shackled by fear, doubt, and worry. I put on a happy face while navigating my day-to-day duties, but I was emotionally drained, stressed, and unhappy. When I hit rock bottom, and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, I was determined to live life differently. I knew there had to be another way. Out of that determination, and guidance from Spirit, the "Living in the Light" blog was born. It documents my spiritual journey out of the darkness and into the Light. After nine months of publicly sharing my journey, and consciously releasing my attachment to the ego, I experienced a powerful spiritual awakening. I went from living in fear, doubt, worry, and stress to complete inner peace. My greatest passion has become assisting others on their own journey to inner peace. My spiritual memoir, From Stress to Peace: An Intimate Journal on the Journey from Living in Darkness to Living in the Light, is available now on Amazon and BN.com. Click the tabs at the top of the page to learn more about the From Stress to Peace 21-Day Challenge, Living in the Light Retreats, 1:1 sessions, and the Living in the Light Community - all of which are designed to support your journey to inner peace. I appreciate you taking the time to visit the blog and look forward to supporting you in any way I can!
